Below is a step-by-step guide to replacing the main O-rings on the Mopar electronic power steering pump P05154663AB Dodge Durango 3.6L 2014–2015) to stop fluid leaks.

This pump is an electro-hydraulic unit (electric motor + hydraulic pump), so care is required around electronics.

⚠️ Important Before You Start

  • Disconnect the battery before touching the pump.
  • Power steering systems operate at very high pressure.
  • Work clean — dirt inside the pump will destroy it.
  • If the electric motor housing is leaking internally, rebuilding may not fix it.

Tools & Supplies Needed

  • Basic metric socket set
  • Torx bits (typically T25–T30)
  • Snap ring pliers
  • Small pick set
  • Torque wrench (inch-lb preferred)
  • Drain pan
  • Clean lint-free rags
  • Brake cleaner (non-chlorinated)
  • Power steering fluid (correct spec for your vehicle)
  • Replacement O-rings
  • Assembly lube or clean PS fluid

Step 1 – Remove the Pump from the Vehicle

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove engine covers and intake components for access.
  3. Place a drain pan underneath.
  4. Disconnect:
    • Pressure line
    • Return line
    • Electrical connector
  5. Remove mounting bolts.
  6. Remove the pump assembly from vehicle.

Drain remaining fluid.

Step 2 – Clean the Exterior

Before opening:

  • Spray the outside with brake cleaner.
  • Blow dry with compressed air.
  • Keep dirt out of internal sections.

This is critical.

Step 3 – Separate the Hydraulic Pump from the Motor

  1. Remove Torx bolts around the pump housing.
  2. Carefully separate the hydraulic head from the electric motor.
    • Do NOT pry aggressively.
    • Watch for alignment dowels.

You’ll now see the pump cartridge section.

Step 4 – Disassemble the Pump Section

  1. Remove rear cover plate (usually held with Torx screws).
  2. Carefully lift off cover.
  3. Remove:
    • Cam ring
    • Rotor
    • Vanes
    • Thrust plates

Lay them out in order. Orientation matters.

Step 5 – Replace the Main O-Rings

Common leak points on this pump:

Housing perimeter O-ring

  • Large O-ring between pump head and motor.
  • Remove with plastic pick.
  • Clean groove thoroughly.
  • Install new O-ring lightly coated with PS fluid.

 Rear cover O-ring

  • Located in groove of rear plate.
  • Replace and lubricate before reinstalling.

Step 6 – Reassemble Pump Cartridge

  1. Coat all internal parts lightly with clean power steering fluid.
  2. Install:
    • Cam ring
    • Rotor
    • Vanes (rounded edge outward)
  3. Reinstall thrust plates.
  4. Install rear cover with new O-ring.
  5. Torque bolts evenly in criss-cross pattern.

(Typical small pump cover bolts: ~80–120 in-lb. Verify for your application.)

Step 7 – Rejoin Pump to Electric Motor

  1. Install new large perimeter O-ring.
  2. Align dowel pins.
  3. Carefully mate hydraulic section to motor.
  4. Install housing bolts.
  5. Torque evenly.

Step 8 – Reinstall in Vehicle

  1. Mount pump.
  2. Reconnect pressure and return lines.
  3. Reconnect electrical connector.
  4. Reinstall removed components.

Step 9 – Refill & Bleed System

  1. Fill reservoir with correct fluid.
  2. Leave cap off.
  3. Turn steering wheel slowly lock-to-lock (engine OFF) 10–15 times.
  4. Start engine.
  5. Continue slow lock-to-lock cycles.
  6. Check for:
    • Foaming
    • Whining
    • Leaks

Top off fluid.

 Pro Tip

Use our Viton (FKM) O-rings rated for hydraulic fluid and temperature. Cheap rubber rings will swell and fail.
